Books for Society is a non-profit organization, supported by literacy programs in southern Alberta. Read On works in partnership with the local health unit to support Books for Babies. Each year, the health unit receives and distributes 1000+ Books for Babies bags. The cost for each bag, containing a hard-cover book, a soft-cover book, and literacy hints and information, is approximately $26. The bags are given to new parents at no charge when they bring their babies to the health unit for their 4-month vaccinations. The other literacy programs also receive free Babies bags and contents to distribute to new parents. Through the distribution of these bags the message of the importance of early literacy reaches a wide audience in Southern Alberta.

The Books for Babies Society is dependent on the funds they receive, primarily from their participation in casinos, to cover the costs of all the Books for Babies bags distributed in southern Alberta. We, in turn, depend on the volunteers who step forward to cover each of the positions required at the casino.

Volunteers receive a complimentary admission ticket to the game. Parking is not included, so you can be dropped off or park across the road.

Volunteers can watch the game when it is in play. If they are approached during play to buy a ticket, they can sell tickets but they cannot actively approach people during play.

The volunteers wear hurricanes jerseys and a United Way apron while selling tickets.

Opportunities are available at each home game from September to April.

The Warehouse Intermediate position is something we’re asking for specifically during the first two weeks of the month, when our client intake volume is at its highest. The intermediate, as the name suggests, will bridge the gap between our intake and warehouse roles. Primarily, they will be responsible for ensuring that the intake area receives everything it needs during busy periods, as well as clearing away any obstructions that may be piling up and keeping things running smoothly.

Welcome to Leftovers! Our Rescue Food volunteers transport unsellable but still edible food from donors directly to service agencies. Rescuing food can be as convenient as stopping off at a local business on your way home. Or challenge yourself to learn more about the city you live in with a route that’s out of your normal area! Either way, you’re getting good food to the people who need it most.

Sign up in the Food Rescue app and select your city to see what opportunities are currently available. Then choose the opportunity with the time, date, and location(s) that work best for you, and you’re ready to prevent good food from being wasted!
