Books for Society is a non-profit organization, supported by literacy programs in southern Alberta. Read On works in partnership with the local health unit to support Books for Babies. Each year, the health unit receives and distributes 1000+ Books for Babies bags. The cost for each bag, containing a hard-cover book, a soft-cover book, and literacy hints and information, is approximately $26. The bags are given to new parents at no charge when they bring their babies to the health unit for their 4-month vaccinations. The other literacy programs also receive free Babies bags and contents to distribute to new parents. Through the distribution of these bags the message of the importance of early literacy reaches a wide audience in Southern Alberta.

The Books for Babies Society is dependent on the funds they receive, primarily from their participation in casinos, to cover the costs of all the Books for Babies bags distributed in southern Alberta. We, in turn, depend on the volunteers who step forward to cover each of the positions required at the casino.

Empowering youth is one of the cornerstones of what we do here at the YWCA Lethbridge & District, and we are proud to partner with the YouthInspirED Foundation to introduce this new initiative to Lethbridge. We believe strongly in the importance of supporting, nurturing, and encouraging our youth in their personal and professional development, and together we are excited to bring this organization into our community.

YouthInspirED (YIED) is a youth-led nonprofit that helps young people set up virtual tutoring programs in their communities.

YIED was established with the mission of “Empowering youth to become successful leaders through participation in, and management of, their own tutoring programs.”

We currently operate in Halifax and Toronto, and are in the midst of opening a chapter in Lethbridge in partnership with YWCA Lethbridge and District.

The Lethbridge Helpers is dedicated to ensuring that all students in Lethbridge receive the academic support they need to become fearless learners. We offer free online tutoring and language sessions for elementary, junior high school, and high school students.

United Way is seeking new faces for its Board of Directors!

United Way’s purpose is to raise funds to support essential local programs at United Way Partner Agencies. They provide grants to programs that target poverty reduction, building healthy families and strong communities, and helping children and youth be all they can be.

United Way works with local companies to facilitate payroll deduction donations for employees. Many small donations over time add up to BIG change. United Way also accepts donations from generous individuals and corporations to fuel change through collective impact.

The Board of Directors is proud of United Way’s impact on people, and in communities across South Western Alberta.

If you are passionate, and love to see positive changes where you live, read on!

United Way Board Directors are dedicated and skilled in their work. The Board assumes both a mandatory role, based on legal requirements of boards of directors, and a chosen role, based on the board model it has elected for itself.

United Way is specifically looking for individuals with finance and legal background to join the board.  Other individuals are welcome to apply as vacant positions are available.

Volunteer mentors are a crucial aspect of our program. We have space for 70 students but only have 4 teachers on staff. It’s impossible for those teachers to build close connections with all the students. Which is where volunteers come in! During our after school program we need volunteers to build relationships with the students and help them participate in the daily program. Our program runs Monday-Thursday from 3:30pm-5:30pm. We ask volunteers to choose one day/week to commit to helping out.

The first hour of our program students are arriving, eating snack and playing games which is the perfect time to visit and check-in with them. The second hour is dependent on the day. We have group music lessons, theory games, music appreciation activities, crafts, wide games, practices or ensemble class. While experience in music is an asset for volunteers, there are lots of other activities that we need support with too.

Having an older mentor has a huge impact on the success and wellbeing of a child. You can make a positive difference in the life of a child at Branches!
