Food Recovery Volunteers

  • Food Recovery Volunteers support the Community Engagement team to increase food security by reducing food waste while working in the Co-op Community kitchen.
  • Duties include completing assigned recipes, food prep and processing, canning and other forms of food preservation. Food is required to be packaged and labeled for distribution. General kitchen maintenance and cleaning is also required. These tasks are done safely and effectively through detailed processes while adhering to food safety guidelines.
  • Food prepared will be distributed to clients through our “pick room”, used for fundraising purposes and for events.

Volunteer Duties

  • Support the Community Engagement Team as a part of the Food Recovery program
  • Closed-toed shoes, hairnets, aprons and gloves are required to be worn in the kitchen
  • Assist in preparation of food including following recipes and food processing directions as requested by IFB staff member
  • As a representative of IFB during volunteer shifts, act in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Be punctual and dependable when reporting for assigned shifts
  • Log volunteer hours
  • Notify IFB of absences in a timely manner
  • Maintain confidentiality of all IFB stakeholders (donors, clients, volunteers, and program participants)

Age Requirements

Must be 18 years old and above

  • Ability to work in a team setting to complete assigned tasks
  • Adhere to food safety standards
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate initiative
  • Basic cooking/ food prep skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while standing continuously
  • Successfully complete trial shift
  • Attend a Volunteer Onboarding session
  • Complete Food Banks Alberta Food Safey Handling course (online delivery)
  • Attend team meetings and training
  • Complete and adhere to IFB Confidentiality Agreement
  • Acknowledge Food Banks Canada Ethical Food Banking Code

 

Schedule

  • Wednesday or Thursday morning shift 9:00am – 12:00pm
  • Wednesday or Thursday afternoon shift 1:00pm-3:00pm
  • Other shifts will be determined as needed
  • Interfaith Food Bank has a 2 shifts/ week maximum
  • Willing to make long-term (at least 4-month commitment ideal)

Service & Care Volunteers support the Client Services team in providing Emergency Food Assistance. This involves supporting clients while ensuring a welcoming, inclusive and accessible environment. Duties include tasks such as greeting clients and updating files, fulfilling hamper orders, facilitating pick room access and empowering clients while decreasing barriers to services. These tasks are done safely and effectively through detailed processes while adhering to food safety guidelines.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Good customer service skills including listening, empathy and maintaining dignity for clients
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while standing continuously
  • Able to work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Some positions require heavy lifting activities on a regular basis (40lbs and over)
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and demonstrate initiative
  • Intermediate computer skills are an asset
