Exhibit Rovers interact with our visitors, providing an interpretive experience that connects them to nature through our exhibit program. Supporting the mission and vision, the Exhibit Rover represents the Nature Centre to visitors during normal operating hours (between 10am and 6pm).

Location: Exhibit Rovers work in the exhibit rooms – primarily the front lobby, main gallery, and exhibit gallery at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, located north of the High Level Bridge via Indian Battle Road and 3rd Avenue South.

Volunteer Duties

Role:

  • Provide an enjoyable and meaningful experience for Nature Centre visitors.
  • Interpret Nature Centre exhibits.
  • Connect visitors with staff when appropriate.

Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Visitor Experience
    • Welcomes visitors to the Nature Centre.
    • Answers questions about the Nature Centre.
    • Answers the phone and directs calls.
    • Discusses recent sightings.
    • Encourages donations to the Growing the Grassroots Endowment Fund.
    • Encourages visitors to sign our guest book.
    • Facilitate various exhibit activities.
    • Promote other Lethbridge and regional recreational and cultural attractions.
    • Recommends trails and parks for visitors to visit.
  • Administrative Help
    • Help prepare bulk mailings.
    • Makes reminder phone calls to program participants.
    • Prepares correspondence as needed.
    • Proofreads brochure copy when time allows.
  • Programming Support
    • Help care for pets.
    • Provides interpretive experience in our exhibit room.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Training, Orientation and Supervision:

  • Interpretation of our exhibits will be modeled by staff and other Exhibit Rovers to assist with understanding of the Lethbridge river valley.
  • Exhibit Rovers are encouraged to lead groups as they are comfortable.
  • Staff and volunteers will provide support for an Exhibit Rover until they are able to lead independently.
  • All volunteers will learn about the history of the Nature Centre and its place in Lethbridge’s River Valley; familiarize themselves with Roving resources including handouts, speaking points, maps, guide books, and library resources.

Requirements

  • Age: 16 years old or above
  • Dress Code: Outdoor Casual with uniform top provided (light brown t-shirt, dark-brown t-shirt, polo shirt, black vest).
  • Security Checks: All Nature Centre volunteers are subject to a criminal record check.

Qualifications & Personal Traits:

  • Enjoy working with children.
  • Excellent speaking skills in English (or French).
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups.
  • Desire to learn about Lethbridge Natural History.
  • Able to lift materials related to programs.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Patience

Schedule

  • One shift every two weeks for three hours (10am-1pm and 1pm-4pm).
  • Please be able to make a minimum commitment of six (6) months. We are able work around vacations and exams. We ask that you are flexible as our hours are seasonal scheduled varies from month to month and can change with little notice.
  • Length of Volunteer Shift: Generally shifts are three hours in length and are assigned based on scheduling needs and your availability.

Conservation Outreach Assistants help to conserve the City of Lethbridge’s river valley by monitoring, observing, and reporting activities that are not permitted in natural areas. They also act as the eyes and ears of the Nature Centre by reporting their observations of the natural world and seasonal phenomena.

Supporting the mission and vision, Conservation Outreach Assistants represent the Nature Centre in the community by helping trail users understand and appreciate the parks they are visiting.

Location: Conservation Outreach Assistants specifically target Nature Preservation Area Parks in the City of Lethbridge, including: Lethbridge Nature Reserve, Elizabeth Hall Wetlands, Alexander Wilderness Park, and Cottonwood Park.

Special Events Assistants provide support during busy festivals and offsite events in an effort to raise awareness about the Nature Centre’s programs and services.

Supporting the mission and vision, the Special Event Assistant represents the Nature Centre in the community by helping acting as an ambassador at events like Canada Day at Henderson Lake, Lethbridge Children’s Expo, Spring Nature Fest, Discovery Days, Nature Play Fest, among many others.

Location: Special Events take place at the Nature Centre and at various locations throughout the City of Lethbridge.

Trail Rovers act as the eyes and ears of the Nature Centre – reporting their observations, sightings, and photos from the trail system. Supporting the mission and vision, the Trail Rover represents the Nature Centre in the community by helping trail users understand and appreciate what they are experiencing. Rovers often share their love and knowledge of what can be discovered in Lethbridge’s river valley.

Location: Trail Rovers work in various locations throughout the City of Lethbridge at any park or natural area accessible by the city’s trail system.
