The Volunteer Program at Peak is intended to expand the community connections for individuals in receipt of services, while providing a meaningful volunteer experience for those volunteering.

Volunteers are not to replace staff members of Peak, but to be additional resources for the people receiving services.

Volunteers will service in specific areas at Peak and will be provided specific directions and expectations of the role they will play.

Volunteer Duties

ROLE : Cooking – Nutrition Program

The role of the Volunteer is to provide direction to the individuals and the staff providing support to individuals with disabilities as it pertains to the Nutrition or Cooking activities planned for that day,  or special event.  Further, their role is to foster, facilitate development and expansion of the cooking abilities of individuals in an attempt to assist individuals pursue and fulfill their goals, objectives and aspirations. 

  • Plan specific food dishes which will be undertaken by the individuals.
  • Each cooking event should relate to nutritional requirements and perhaps seasonal activities (example Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines, etc.) and should be completed within a set timeframe.
  • Provide the Team Leader with a list of supplies required in advance of the project start; two weeks preferred.  
  • Attempt to keep the cost of supplies low as individuals will be contributing to the cost and all are on a fixed income.  
  • The Volunteer may seek donations for supplies on behalf of Peak.  
  • The day of the project, the Volunteer will ensure that the supplies are laid out and evenly distributed to each participant.
  • The Volunteer will ensure that each person is assigned a responsibility that matches their capabilities; discussion with support staff may be required in advance.
  • The Volunteer will provide a photo or sample of the finished project so that individuals will have a visual product of their goal or purpose of the activity. 
  •  A written menu and recipe will also be needed for each participant which easy to follow step by step directions.  The step by step direction can be followed by an independent individual or by the staff providing supports to individuals who need more assistance.
  • The Volunteer will assist staff in cleaning up at the end of the session so that the space can be used for the next group and gathering.
  • Food will either be eaten together in a shared meal, distributed evenly for transport home or frozen for later consumption at a special event (ie. cookies, pies, etc.)


  • Age: 18 years old or older
  • Safe Food Handling training would be beneficial, but not required
  • First Aid training would be beneficial, but not required
  • True enjoyment of cooking; baking ; willingness to teach others
  • Hand – eye coordination; chopping, cutting, slicing, peeling skills
  • Planning & implementing; this may include some budgeting
  • Communication skills – interacting socially with individuals & staff on a regular basis
  • Some understanding of addictions, mental health & illness, high risk lifestyles & homelessness, poverty
  • Volunteer or work experience in the disability field or human services would be beneficial
  • Volunteers will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement with the organization



Volunteer Hours are flexible:

  • Day Program Cooking Class: Weekly – Wednesday Mornings (10am-12pm)
  • R Space Cooking: Twice Weekly – Tuesday and Thursday (10am-12pm/1pm)

Volunteers may sign up for once a week or once a month.
